At the turn of the century with internet services not being as dependable and fast as today, people were relying solely on printers to print documents and preserve them in physical form for future use. Customers had less options due to lack of high-speed internet, file sharing websites and Cloud storage.
However, things have changed now as these services are widely available and also reasonably priced. But still people prefer printers to documents stored in physical form.
Inject Pushes Laser to Claim Numero Uno
Printers are broadly classified into two types – Inkjet Printers and Laser Printers. According to the latest report from International Data Corporation (IDC), in the Inkjet printer space in India, Epson has become the leader while in Laser space HP still maintains its numero uno status.
As per the IDC report, in the Inkjet space, Epson has overtaken Hewlett-Packard as the market leader in terms of units sold for the first time after posting 26.5 per cent growth year-on-Year (YoY). As per the data available, Epson has captured 42.9 per cent of the market share in India while HP had 39.4 per cent in 2017 Q1. Cannon bagged the third slot.
Explaining the reason behind the staggering growth witnessed by Epson in Inkjet space, the report said: “Over the past one year, the Indian printer market has seen a significant technology shift with customers showing increased preference towards Ink Tank Printers over entry-level laser printers. The shift is majorly due to the low cost of printing, which starts from as low as 7 paise for black and white printing per page, 18 paise for colour printout per page and availability of affordable and high page yield ink bottles. Seeing the advantages, vendors also gave significant marketing push, which has generated high visibility in the market for ink tank printers.”
However, Laser printer market has witnessed a decline of 10.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the similar period in 2016. In this category, HP with a market share of 54.8 per cent remains the leader followed by Canon and Samsung.
The report also highlighted the significant growth of shipment over the six quarters with shipment of printers reaching 799,164 in the corresponding period, the report further stated.
