NEW DELHI: To minimise waiting time at booking windows, Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu on Monday launched the sale of unreserved tickets through handheld terminals at the Hazrat Nizamuddin station as a pilot project.
Each machine has a unique number which can be used to monitor and regulate the functioning and is GPRS-enabled. The data can also be synchronised through a network cable with a server.
The unreserved ticketing system serves nearly two crore passengers through nearly 12,300 counters at 5,864 locations and generate approximately Rs 59 crore a day for the railways.
These terminals can issue platform tickets, monthly season tickets and journey tickets for adult, child and senior citizen. On these terminals, printing is done through a thermal printer on thermal stationery. The issue of ticket will be fast and will eliminate possibilities of fraud.
