Indian Railways to Introduce POS Machines at Ticket Counters

Indian Railways will soon allow passengers to make electronic payment at its ticket counters, media reports said.

Passengers will be able to purchase tickets through the passenger reservation systems (PRS) in railway reservation centres using their credit cards, debit cards and pre-paid cards approved by the Reserve Bank of India, as well as through point-of-sale bank machines, a Business Standard report stated.

Currently, around half of all passenger tickets sold are via electronic channels through the Indian Railway Catering &Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

The implementation of the new plan is expected to reduce transaction times, make payments easier, and reduce queues at ticket counters. Indian Railways is also planning to utilise digital wallet systems in future, including Paytm, Oxigen and Freecharge.
The report also said that Indian Railways has sent out a request for proposal (RFP) for the enablement of electronic payments system on its website.
